Gardening Tips for September 2010
- Fall is a great time to plant trees, shrubs, bulbs, grass seed, sod and perennials so they’ll be hardy for winter.
- September is the best month of the entire year to seed your lawn.
- Clean up any dead or diseased plants in your beds to make room for mums and pansies.
- If you haven’t already done so this year, September is a good time to apply lime to your lawn to prepare for fall seeding.
- Use Scott’s Weed & Feed to boost the health of your lawn and control weeds.
- Do not prune spring flowering trees or shrubs such as Rhododendrons, Azaleas or other spring flowering shrubs or you’ll remove next year’s blooms.
- Trim back annuals and fertilize for one more fall bloom.
- Prune your evergreens to shape them so any new growth will have time to harden off before frost.
- Spray roses with fungicide/insecticide and fertilize.
- Spray houseplants with insecticidal soap to prepare them to bring inside.
- At the end of September, lift and divide peonies.
- Plant mums, pansies, cabbage & kale, and fall blooming perennials and annuals for fall color.
- The following is a list of plants and trees that provide color in the month of September: Beautyberry, Cotoneaster, Viburnums, Crape Myrtles, Hydrangeas, Butterfly Bush, Hypericum, and Pyracantha.
